When Did You First Start To Go Gray

Gray hair is definitely not something that everybody accepts casually as it does make a person look old but then the thing to understand is that it is a completely natural process and you cannot really do anything about it!

You can just find ways to counter the situation but in the end gray hair is inevitable. You can definitely solve the problem by applying hair color to it. So when did you first start to go gray?

If everything is normal you will find the first signs of gray hair in your late thirties though this depends from individual to individual. Many people might see gray hair earlier in there life, and this might aim towards some kind of health issue, and you may wish to consult a dermatologist for the same.

Other than that, gray hair is perfectly normal and you will have to face them at some stage of your life. Some people want to reverse gray hair (i.e take matters into their own hand and seek a grey hair cure), whilst others are happy to grow grey and eventually white.

Hair dye and colorings will sometimes cover the gray hair but they need to be used frequently, and a more long term treatment for grey hair is preferred by many.

After all, if you start to go gray in your twenties realistically you could end up dying your hair for around 50 to 60 years. That’s an awful lot of chemicals to be feeding your head with.

As you can see when Mannon asks this very question below, he or she has a wide variety of answers. You can add your answer and comments at the bottom of this page.

mannon asked:

When did you first start to go gray and does gray hair ever turn white?

People have told me they think it’s ‘weird’ that I haven’t started to get gray hair yet, (I’m 57), but it seems ‘normal’ to me.

BTW, bring it on! I’m not worried – just curious about how much variation there is.

Of course it turns white. Why wouldn’t it. There is no reason why it would not.

hear turning gray can be estimated by the age your parents turn gray, if they ever did. it is not uncommon for people to never go gray, and as for turning white, only specific colours of hair turn white, ginger is the most common.

I’m 25 and I have strands of grey, my best friend is 28 and he is completely bald on top, we call it the horseshoe.

My hair started to turn grey when I was a teenager, maybe 16 years old or so, and now, in my late 50s, it’s mostly grey with just about 5-10% darker hair mixed in there.

And, just for the record, all “grey” hair is white, it’s just that when it’s salt-and-pepper it looks greyer and when it’s all white, it looks whiter, that’s all, but each individual strand is white, trust me.

It will rely on your family background. My parents were grey, not silver
or white. But they weren’t totally grey. One of my grandmothers’ had
white hair, but her son, my dad, did not. That grandmother turned white in her 50′s, and never was grey. She had a sliver sheen to her hair and was often complemented for it’s beauty. I have silver strands in my hair, which also darkened when I got older. I have been slow to get these strands and I am in my mid 60′s. My husband has silver
and white hair, he started greying when he was in his 30′s. His parents greyed when they were younger too. His oldest aunt had silver hair, and was admired by her other sisters, one of which was my husbands’ mother. She had auburn hair naturally as a young girl. And it turned an ugly shade of grey. She began coloring it dark brown in her 50′s.She and her sisters all wanted that silver hair color in the worst way.
No matter what your true hair color is, you can always
change it to the color you prefer when the time comes. Hair coloring kits are so easy to use at home. Gone are the dyes that made a womans’ hair turn from grey to blue, or pink or purple. Thank goodness for that.

I kept one color or another in my hair – until I retired at age 61.

I let it grow out and was quite surprised to see how gray I had become.

    It took getting use to.

It’s not completely gray and not white at all.

My friends hair is white – her sister applies some sort of lightener and it turns it pure white.

My hair is more like a steel gray – I don’t mind but I do agree – I would like white best.

My daughter just turned 51 – she has a fleck or two of gray..

My cousins hair turned prematurely gray by the time she was 29.

EDIT: I just looked it up – it means the same – gray or grey.

I had a bad shock of news in my late 40′s. I got to streaks of white in each temple that week. It has not advanced. It’s the same two spots. I use a 1/4 tsp. of hair color on those spots every 4-6 weeks.

My mom passed at 52 y.o. so I don’t know her greying pattern. My dad has a full head of white hair at age 80. I don’t know what to expect for my future. I’m the youngest of 3 sisters. They are not showing much signs of grey.

  9. caraohara says:

I was about 45 yrs old when I noticed my hair getting some grey through it…so I started to put a colour in it….but at 50 I let the colour grow out and was surprised to see just I big grey streak across the front of my hair. I’m 60 now and the grey streak doesn’t appear to have gotten any bigger….or maybe I need my eyes tested again.

When I was three years old, and had my first flying lesson. When I said what dad said for the first time.

Bleach your hair. Get some dye and do it platinum.
Mine is not grey or white, it is platinum, naturally.
I dyed it red a few weeks ago, guess what color it is?
Not red, just light blond again. Didn’t take it.
Guess God wants me blond or platinum.

  11. Baw says:

I noticed my first gray hair when I was 12. I’m also in my 50s with salt and pepper gray, mostly around my face. My 14 year old grand-daughter thinks it looks cool.

  12. pau says:

i’m having some white hairs already

  13. jd says:

I was twenty four and it hit me hard. They were and are white. Not grey.
    Started in my beard first.
I don’t think I will ever be all white. At least it still there .

  14. sage seeker says:

My ‘gray’ has always been white…began in my late 30′s..now is a about 60% white and 40% black – I’m now 67

  15. corgigirl says:

I never had any gray hairs until I had babies in my 30s. Now it is “salt and pepper”, but I do color it. Looks great with reddish-blonde highlights. So much better than the alternative. I’m in my 60s. My avatar is me 30 years ago.

  16. sutra says:

I think it depends on genes. The women on my mothers side of the family were all blonde and all went white instead of gray. I remember my grandmother had thick white curly hair that looked like a halo around her head. It was pure white by the time she wass 60 and she never put anything on it.
