Corticular. I was a male hairstylist for years. I tried so many different kinds and you can’t go wrong with my choice.
Reds are the hardest to hold color. Not necessarily covering gray though. Some grays don’t color well just because of the type of gray it is. Stubborn gray won’t color well period. Professionals have special colors and products just for coloring gray. It don’t’ know about over the counter colors, they just don’t color as nicely as professional colors do.
All grays are hard to handle. What you’re going to need to do before you color any hair at all is go to a salon or hair care professional and ask what kind of a base color you’re going to need to use on your hair before they color. I’m not exactly sure if it’s called a “base” color or if it’s a primer or whatever, but the thing is this product coats the grays and help them hold hair coloring dye.

My mother-in-law is a natural redhead but went blond once she started turning gray. I assume that it’s much easier to cover those pesky grays by bleaching them.
For great coverage and well-conditioned hair without having to go to “permanent” I swear by Clairol Natural Instincts. No ammonia, and silky-soft hair. It works quite well on my hair, and mine is hard to color and about 90% grey now.
They even pack it with a color-protecting conditioner that has three or fours treatments to the tube.
My hair grows out before I need to worry about fade. One thing that also helps is avoiding shampooing for at least 24 hours after coloring. This makes the color “stick” better.

I, too, would like to know the answer to this. I have tried almost every variation of almost every brand and nothing seems to work very well. I definitely can tell you that the new one with that pretty Hispanic girl (I am having a major brain fart on the brand and the actress), is by far the worst that I have tried. It talks about being a color to match your complexion. Anyway, my greys were out in full force within 2 weeks!
I think that the best for me, so far, has been the Clairol one that is only a level 2 (Natural Instincts?). It lasts just over a month for me, matches my natural color the best (reddish light brown), and is less damaging (at least apparantly, anyways).
For anybody that lists a brand only available in certain stores, please include that information. I think we all would appreciate it.
