Preventing Black Maltipoo Fur from fading?

May 18, 2009 · Filed Under Dogs
MommatoONE asked:

Does anyone own a black Maltipoo? I am purchasing one next week, and decided on her as opposed to the cream one. She has silky black wavy hair and is just absolutely adorable. I’m wondering if there’s shampoos or other things that can prevent it from fading? I know some dogs just stay black, and others start turning this charcoal/grey color. Any tips??

You can’t control the color of a dog’s fur. It’s genetic.

it is a mutt — there is no way of knowing one way or the other what the coat will do as it is a mix of likely poor quality genes to begin with since no responsible, knowledgeable breeder would breed mutts on purpose so it is from some back yard greeder or puppy mill that just puts two poor quality dogs together and then sells them to someone who doesn’t know any better with some cutsie name as a gimmick to make them think it is something besides what it is, a mutt. Dye the hair, who cares…

Feed good food, and don’t let the dog spend too much time in the sun. You cannot force a coat to stay silky black, if it’s going to fade due to genetics, it’s going to fade. It’s a mixed breed dog, it might end up bald for all you know.

My reccomedation is Canidae chicken and rice. Not all life stages but chicken and rice. Keeps my dog’s coat gleaming.

Well, you know me. I would reccomend long-hair shampoo. No need to buy anything special. Black multi-poos will most likely not fade away. Don’t give the dog TOO much baths, but just a few. I actully have a white-creamy one. And the cream color hasn’t gone away yet. I’m excited to hear more about your dog. Sounds addorable!
    Well, Good Luck!

you cant prevent fading… its a genetic thing. If she has a fading gene, her coat will fade. It may stay black too.. just depends on what genetic gave her. Since she is a mixed breed dog, it will be hard to say what her coat will do.. her genes are a crap-shot.

I know of a Crested puff who was a tri-color as a puppy.. he was mostly black, and the black areas were jet-black. He gradually faded as he matured. He is 2 years old, and is now a beautiful Silver-white.
