There are many different gray hair causes, but contrary to what many people may think stress in itself is not generally one of them.
Many people are still confused about why hair turns gray
For years people have said “Do not stress too much or your hair will turn gray”.
Gray hair is actually caused by the lack of melanin.
Melanin is produced by our bodies and over time it will gradually decrease resulting in gray hair.
However, with that said, it is true that certain medical conditions and illnesses can cause a weakened immune system.
A weakened immune system can lead to many physical symptoms, including hair loss and loss of pigmentation of the hair.
An example of a medical condition that sometimes causes of gray hair is a thyroid disorder.
Sometimes when these illnesses or health conditions are treated, normal hair color can return.
Whatever the reasons are for why your hair turns gray, there are ways in which you can get rid of it and you can reverse gray hair.
As you see below, when beans 4 brains asked the question does stress cause gray hair, a variety of answers were given.
beans 4 brains asked:
Does stress cause gray hair, or is that just an old wives tale?
I’ve always assumed it was heredity/gentics that caused one to start getting gray hair, but a lot of people have said that stress can cause that too.
I’ve heard that stress, in general, can have adverse effects on the body by weakining the immune system, but can it also effectuate the growth of gray hair?
I have a few scattered hairs about … *sighs* oh gross! time to colour! lol, but i was just curious.

I havent heard of any stress on the body causing grey hair. Stress will however cause your hair to fall out in uneven clumps.
I believe stress can cause gray hair
stress leads to decrease apetite and even taking less vitamins and nutrients required for proper hairgrowth
Yes stress can cause gray hair and too much stress can also cause tooth decay and many other problems
Personally, I think that if this were true, I’d be silver by now. *checks* Nope, still only the three or four silver hairs I had at age 20. Dunno if this is the case for everyone though – I’ve a cousin who had male pattern baldness and complete graying at age 18, and a boss with white hair before he was 30. Maybe it’s only true of males…lol
Seems the jury is still out, since it appears stress can be a factor though heredity/genetics/aging process are the “primary” causes.
Gray hair is genetic. Stress causes hair loss.
